The report on ‘one nation, one election’, overseen by a high-level committee chaired by former president Ram Nath Kovind, was submitted today. President Droupadi Murmu received the report this morning.
This initiative aims at synchronizing elections across the country, suggesting the simultaneous conduct of polls for both the Lok Sabha and all state assemblies. Currently, in India, general elections for Parliament and state assembly elections are held separately upon the conclusion of the incumbent government’s term or its dissolution for various reasons.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has long been an advocate for the One Nation, One Election concept. Other notable members of the committee, led by Mr. Kovind, include Home Minister Amit Shah, former leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, former finance commission chairman N K Singh, former Lok Sabha secretary general Subhash Kashyap, and senior advocate Harish Salve.
