ADR report reveals the criminal cases and wealth of sitting MPs

According to the analysis conducted by the Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR), out of the 514 sitting Lok Sabha MPs examined, 225 of them, constituting 44 per cent, have declared criminal cases against themselves in the self-sworn affidavits scrutinized by the organization. Among these, 5 per cent are billionaires, possessing assets surpassing Rs 100 crore. Notably, 29 per cent of the MPs with criminal charges face serious criminal cases, encompassing allegations such as murder, attempted murder, incitement of communal discord, kidnapping, and crimes against women.

Specifically, nine of the sitting MPs with serious criminal cases are implicated in murder cases, with five of them affiliated with the BJP. Additionally, 28 sitting MPs are entangled in cases related to attempted murder, with a majority of 21 MPs belonging to the BJP. Likewise, 16 sitting MPs confront charges linked to crimes against women, including three allegations of rape. The report also delves into the financial profiles of these lawmakers.

Regarding party affiliations, the BJP and the Congress have the highest representation of billionaire MPs, although other parties also feature significantly in the analysis. In terms of the distribution of criminal cases across states, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Himachal Pradesh emerge with over 50 per cent of their MPs facing criminal charges. Moreover, the analysis exposes variations in wealth among MPs, ranging from hundreds of crores to minimal assets.

Remarkably, the top three MPs with the highest declared assets are Nakul Nath (Congress), DK Suresh (Congress), and Kanumuru Raghu Rama Krishna Raju (Independent), possessing assets worth hundreds of crores. The report further illuminates the educational background, age, and gender distribution among the sitting MPs. A significant majority, accounting for 73 per cent, of the MPs hold graduate or higher educational qualifications, while only 15 per cent of the sitting MPs are women.
