Arabinda Mohapatra, the son of Bijoy Mohapatra joins BJD

Arabinda Mohapatra, the son of former Odisha minister Bijoy Mohapatra, officially joined the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Thursday, amidst the presence of party president and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. Accompanying this significant moment was the attendance of VK Pandian, Chairman 5T.

Bijoy Mohapatra, a prominent political figure in Odisha, had previously served as a minister in the Biju Patnaik government. However, he later ventured into founding the Odisha Gana Parishad in 2001, which subsequently merged with the NCP. Bijoy Mohapatra eventually aligned with the BJP.

In preparation for the upcoming Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections, the BJD engaged in comprehensive discussions with its senior leadership. Led by BJD President and Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik, the party deliberated extensively on its electoral strategy.

Odisha holds considerable electoral significance with its 21 Parliamentary constituencies. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJD emerged as the leading party, securing the highest number of seats, followed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress. Notably, the BJD secured 12 seats, while the BJP and Congress secured 8 and 1 seat(s) respectively.

With 147 Assembly constituencies, Odisha witnessed a sweeping victory for the BJD in the previous polls. During the 2019 elections, held concurrently with the general elections, the BJD secured a commanding 113 seats. In contrast, the BJP trailed behind with 23 seats, followed by the Congress with 9 seats, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) with 1 seat, and an Independent candidate securing another seat.
