Bangladesh Turmoil, Chief Justice Resigns as Protests Intensify

Recent protests in Bangladesh have intensified, leading to significant violence and numerous deaths within the Hindu community. This unrest has prompted the formation of an interim government following the removal of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The situation escalated dramatically when demonstrators issued an ultimatum to Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan, resulting in his resignation.

Chief Justice Hasan’s resignation was prompted by student-led protests, which accused him of bias towards the Hasina administration. In a recent interview, BNP General Secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir explained that Hasan’s departure was directly connected to these demonstrations. Alamgir criticized Hasan for perceived favoritism towards the previous government in his judicial decisions.

Regarding the violence affecting Hindus, Alamgir attributed these attacks to opportunistic individuals rather than a systematic political strategy. He acknowledged that minority communities often face challenges during political upheavals but emphasized that these incidents are not part of a coordinated agenda. Looking ahead, Alamgir expressed that if Khaleda Zia is deemed suitable, she will lead the BNP in the upcoming elections. A BNP-led government, he promised, would work to strengthen relations between Bangladesh and India.
