Bhajan Lal Sharma, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) became chief minister of Rajasthan on Friday. Administered the oath by Governor Kalraj Mishra at a ceremony in Jaipur’s Ramnivas Bag. BJP MLAs Diya Kumari and Prem Chand Bairwa were appointed as his deputies.
The ceremony drew high-profile attendees, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President JP Nadda, and chief ministers from several BJP-ruled states. Outgoing Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot was also present.
Sharma’s appointment was decided during a BJP legislature party meeting on Tuesday, attended by central observers Rajnath Singh, Saroj Pandey, and Vinod Tawde. Sharma had secured victory in the Sanganer assembly seat with an impressive margin of over 48,000 votes, defeating Congress’ Pushpendra Bhardwaj.
Hailing from Bharatpur district, Sharma expressed the BJP team’s commitment to working on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision. He emphasized that all BJP MLAs would unite under Modi’s leadership to fulfill the people’s aspirations and propel Rajasthan towards development.
With Sharma’s leadership, the BJP completed a generational shift in three crucial heartland states – Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh – all of which contributed significantly to the party’s recent victories in assembly polls. In the November 25 election, the BJP secured 115 seats out of 199 contested, while the ruling Congress managed to secure only 69 seats, underlining the BJP’s substantial victory.
