Simone Biles made a triumphant return to Olympic competition on July 28, overcoming left calf pain to kick off her multiple-medal bid in spectacular fashion. The US superstar, aiming to add to her four gold medals from the 2016 Rio Olympics, injured her left calf while warming up for her second apparatus, the floor exercise.

Despite the setback, Biles executed her signature Yurchenko double pike vault — now known as the Biles II — with remarkable precision. Even with a significant step back on landing, she earned a 9.4 for execution, achieving a total score of 15.800 points.

Her second vault also saw a step back on landing, but Biles remained undeterred, laughing as she crawled back to her teammates on her hands and knees. Her coach, Cecile Landi, reassured the team, stating, “It’s on. It’s OK,” signaling that Biles was ready to continue her pursuit of Olympic glory.
