
With the Odisha Assembly Elections looming just days away, the BJP unveiled its roster of 112 contenders for the forthcoming polls. Among the notable candidates listed are Jayanta Kumar Sarangi vying for Puri, Prakash Chandra Sethi for Cuttack Sadar, and Jagannath Pradhan for Bhubaneswar Central.
Scheduled by the Election Commission, Odisha’s Assembly elections will unfold across four phases on May 13, 20, 25, and June 1, culminating in the declaration of results on June 4.
In the previous 2019 elections, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) clinched a commanding win, securing 112 out of 147 seats, while the BJP and Congress managed to secure 23 and nine seats, respectively. The Election Commission earlier outlined the nomination and withdrawal dates, with the first phase allowing nominations until April 25 and withdrawals until April 29. Subsequent phases follow similar timelines, with the second phase spanning May 3 to May 6, the third phase from May 6 to May 9, and the final phase accepting nominations until May 14, with the last withdrawal date set for May 17.
Noteworthy is the Biju Janata Dal’s resounding victory in the 2019 assembly elections, securing 112 out of 147 seats, while the BJP and Congress mustered a modest 23 and nine seats, respectively.
Odisha’s legislative landscape comprises 147 assembly seats, necessitating a minimum of 74 seats for a party to form the state government. This year, the tenure of the Odisha Legislative Assembly is set to conclude on June 24, 2024.
