The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) head office in Fort received a menacing email on Tuesday morning, detailing the placement of bombs at various locations throughout the city. The email insisted on the immediate resignations of RBI governor Shaktikanta Das and union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman. A case has been registered at Mata Ramabai Ambedkar (MRA) Marg Police Station in connection with this incident.
The threatening communication, originating from the email address khilafat.india@gmail.com, implicated a significant financial wrongdoing involving high-ranking banking officials and ministers. The specified bomb locations included the RBI building in Fort, HDFC House in Churchgate, and ICICI Bank Towers in Bandra-Kurla Complex. The sender threatened explosions at these sites by 1:30 pm if the demanded resignations were not promptly submitted, claiming to possess concrete evidence of the alleged scam and insisting on full disclosure.
In response to the threat, Mumbai Police, along with bomb squads, conducted thorough searches at the mentioned locations, finding no suspicious items. A case has been registered under sections 505A and 506(2) of the Indian Penal Code, addressing statements causing fear or alarm and criminal intimidation.
Sources disclosed that the threatening email was dispatched from a server located in Gujarat. Mumbai Police has grappled with approximately 60 threatening phone calls this year, resulting in over 30 arrests. Among the individuals making such calls, mental health issues and minors have been identified as contributing factors.
