Chief Justice Hassan Resigns Following Court Protests

Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan of the Supreme Court in Bangladesh has resigned from his position as head of the judiciary. His resignation follows a significant protest at the Supreme Court in Dhaka on Saturday, where demonstrators surrounded the court and demanded that all judges, including the Chief Justice, step down by 1 pm.

In a statement at the Supreme Court, Chief Justice Hassan cited concerns for the safety of judges across all levels of the judiciary—Supreme Court, High Court, and lower courts—as the primary reason for his resignation. When asked about the potential resignation of other Supreme Court judges, he indicated that it would be up to them to decide.

Protesters had threatened to attack the residences of the Chief Justice and other judges if their demands were not met. This unrest follows the departure of Sheikh Hasina from the country and the formation of a new government led by Muhammad Yunus.
