
The announcement made on Wednesday revealed the six candidates chosen by the Congress party to contest in the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections on February 27, hailing from Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, and Telangana. In Karnataka, the party nominated All India Congress Committee (AICC) treasurer Ajay Maken, alongside Rajya Sabha MP Syed Naseer Hussain and GC Chandrashekhar. Ashok Singh emerged as the candidate from Madhya Pradesh, while Renuka Chowdhury and Anil Kumar Yadav were selected to represent Telangana.
Earlier in the day, Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party, filed her nomination for the Rajya Sabha election from Rajasthan, accompanied by notable party members including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, and state party president Govind Singh Dotasra.
Furthermore, the party unveiled its initial list of candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha Biennial elections. As per the official release from the All India Congress Committee (AICC), Sonia Gandhi is approved to contest from Rajasthan, while Dr. Akhilesh Prasad Singh will represent Bihar. Abhishek Manu Singhvi will contest from Himachal Pradesh, and Chandrakant Handore from Maharashtra.
Rajya Sabha members serve a term of six years, with elections held every two years for 33 percent of the seats. Presently, the Rajya Sabha comprises 245 members. The Election Commission has scheduled the Rajya Sabha elections for 15 states, including Uttar Pradesh, on February 27. The voting hours are set from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the deadline for nominations closing on February 15. The results of the elections are slated to be announced on the same day.
The Election Commission has announced the biennial Rajya Sabha polls for 56 seats, as the tenure of the current members expires in April. Out of the total 245 members, 233 represent the States and Union territories, while 12 are nominated by the President.
