ELLECTION COMMISSION GEARS UP FOR JAMMU AND KASHMIR ASSEMBLY POLLS

The Election Commission has initiated preparations for the upcoming assembly elections in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. As the Commission assesses various aspects, including security, political parties are simultaneously evaluating their prospects. It is anticipated that the Election Commission may announce the election schedule in the first or second week of August.

Polling in Jammu and Kashmir is likely to be conducted in three to four phases, according to the Election Commission. Following the conclusion of the voting process in September, election results are expected to be declared by the end of the month. The primary challenge in conducting these elections remains the security situation in the region, with increased terrorist activities heightening administrative concerns and potentially impacting the election timetable.

The Election Commission has assured that it is closely monitoring the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir, alongside other election preparations. This scrutiny includes a thorough assessment of conditions post the Lok Sabha elections. Currently, the Commission is finalizing the schedule for the assembly elections in the Union Territory. Sources indicate that if the situation in Jammu and Kashmir remains stable during the election period, the official announcement for the assembly elections could come in early August.

The recent Lok Sabha elections saw a high voter turnout in Jammu and Kashmir, with Srinagar setting a new record and other seats also witnessing significant voter enthusiasm. Local political parties, including the National Conference led by Dr. Farooq Abdullah and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) led by Mehbooba Mufti, have been vocal in their demand for elections. The Supreme Court has directed the Election Commission to complete the election process by September 30.
