Fake Social Workers Caught for Blackmail and Sexual Exploitation

Two men posing as social workers were arrested for exploiting young women under the guise of helping them with higher education. The accused, Akshay Das alias Raja age 28 and Akram alias Raju age 30 from Khorda Thana village in West Bengal, were apprehended by Balianta police from an apartment in Rangbazar yesterday. The police seized a car and three mobile phones from the suspects, who have prior cases registered against them in Phulbani, khorda, and Lakshmi Sagar police stations.

The scheme came to light when a brave young woman from the Uttara region reported their activities to the police. The perpetrators, operating through fake social media accounts on Facebook and Instagram, claimed to represent a charitable organization dedicated to supporting underprivileged talented young women seeking higher education. In reality, they were using this façade to blackmail and sexually exploit their victims.

Raja contacted the young woman on Facebook, portraying himself as a benevolent social worker. She, hoping to secure financial aid for her MBA studies, fell prey to his deceit. Raja initially promised her financial support, but his true intentions soon surfaced. He requested a nude video call from her, which he secretly recorded. Raja then used the recording to blackmail her, demanding that she and his accomplice, Raju, engage in sexual activities in exchange for the promised financial aid. The girl faced threats that the video would be made viral if she refused.

Demonstrating remarkable courage, the young woman agreed to meet Raja and Raju, ostensibly complying with their demands, but instead informed the police. The meeting was arranged for 8 pm at an apartment in Rangbazar. As the suspects awaited the girl, the police intervened and arrested them.

The incident highlights the importance of vigilance and the courage to report such crimes, despite the potential for public shame. The authorities are urging other potential victims to come forward and report similar incidents.
