A fire in the Neonatal Care Unit of Maharani Laxmibai Medical College in Jhansi claimed the lives of 10 newborns, sparking unrest among parents and families. The tragic incident occurred around 11:00 pm yesterday, with a short circuit causing the fire to spread across the entire floor. The newborns, aged between 2-8 days, were unable to escape the blaze.
Families gathered outside the hospital, demanding access to meet the injured children, while hospital authorities restricted access to prevent identity confusion. Protestors blocked the road in front of the hospital gate, intensifying their demands for transparency.
Hospital staff managed to rescue 44 children, transferring them to safety. Sixteen remain in critical condition and have been admitted to another hospital. So far, authorities have identified seven of the deceased, with DNA testing planned to confirm the identities of the others.
