
Bhubaneswar: Former Speaker and former Puri MLA Maheshwar Mohanty passed away. He died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar. He was admitted to the hospital from October 31st.
Due to a brain stroke, the health of Maheswar Mohanty was very critical. Despite of all the efforts of the doctor, he could not recover. Finally today (Tuesday) at 3:25 am he breathed his last. A shadow of mourning has been cast in Puri as well as in whole Odisha due to the demise of the former speaker.
Maheshwar Mohanty was a patriarchal leader as well as a skilled organizer. Since 1995, Maheshwar has been continuously elected as MLA from Puri. He was defeated by the BJP in the last assembly elections of 2019. He became MLA of Puri and successfully performed his responsibilities as Law Minister, Tourism Minister, Revenue Minister and Speaker in the Legislative Assembly of the state government. He served as the Speaker of Odisha Legislative Assembly from 2004 to 2008. There was a fatal attack on him in February 21, 2014 near Puri Amla Club when he was in charge of the revenue minister.
