‘Free pass system’ for using social media is over: IT Minister

The ‘free pass’ system for using social media platforms is almost over. Union Information Technology Minister Rajiv Chandrashekhar said that strict accountability will be imposed on this platform all over the world. The Union IT Minister said this step will be taken in the context of the case filed by more than 40 states against Meta in America.

He said, so far the world has focused on the good side of social media only. Now it’s the time to open our eyes to the negative side too. A lawsuit filed in US federal court accuses Meta of exploiting young users.

Meta is using a business model that encourages young users to spend too much time on social media platforms, causing their mental health to suffer. Research has shown that the use of social media platform Meta is creating negative habits in the youth such as depression, anxiety, sleeplessness and also hampering learning in daily life. Shri Chandrasekhar said, the world has kept the use of these platforms free, especially America has done so. But now it’s time to rethink on it and to take some necessary steps.
