The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a stern improvement notice to TajSATS, the flight catering company responsible for supplying food on an Air India flight from Bengaluru to San Francisco, after a passenger discovered a blade-like object in their meal on June 9.
FSSAI CEO Kamala Vardhana Rao announced that a thorough inspection was conducted at TajSATS Bengaluru, resulting in the issuance of the improvement notice. The company has been given 15 days to comply with the regulations and implement necessary measures.

Air India, which is owned by the Tata Group along with TajSATS, apologized for the incident on Monday, attributing it to a malfunction in the vegetable processing machine at TajSATS facilities. FSSAI investigations revealed that the blade came from an automatic vegetable cutter that accidentally got displaced and stuck inside the vegetable piece.
To prevent similar incidents, FSSAI has instructed TajSATS to take corrective actions, including installing x-ray machines, manual vegetable chopping, and strengthening inspection and maintenance processes.
This move comes after FSSAI issued an improvement notice to Indigo in the recent past. The food safety authority has also held several meetings with airlines and food suppliers, urging them to comply with food safety norms. By taking swift action against TajSATS, FSSAI is sending a strong message to the industry to prioritize food safety and adhere to regulations.
