From the 2024 season onwards, Mumbai Indians have appointed a new captain, removing Rohit Sharma, who led them to five championships. Hardik Pandya has been named the captain in his place.
Hardik had played for Mumbai from 2015 to 2021, and in 2022, he became the captain of Gujarat Titans, leading the team to victory. Rohit Sharma had been the captain of Mumbai since 2013.
Having led the team for 11 seasons, Rohit Sharma had won five championships. In IPL history, he is second only to Mahendra Singh Dhoni in successful captaincy. Rohit, in 158 matches as captain, won 87. But in IPL he experienced disappointment continuously in the last three seasons. Mumbai fell short in the race for the title in 2022, finishing in the last position, and withdrew from the playoffs in 2023.
