Raising concerns regarding security measures and the growing influence of the drug mafia, a significant discovery was made within the confines of the Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR) in Mayurbhanj district. Poppy plants, estimated to be worth Rs 3 crore, were uncovered and subsequently eradicated during a police raid conducted in Phulabadi and Jojaguda villages under Jashipur police jurisdiction. Acting upon received intelligence, a collaborative effort involving forest, excise, and police officials was deployed to the targeted areas, resulting in the destruction of the illicit crops.
This instance marks not the first occurrence of such activities within the core and buffer zones of the STR. On March 10, a coordinated operation led to the discovery and destruction of over 5.25 lakh opium poppy plants in Bakua and Kukurabhuka, with an estimated value of Rs 10.66 crore. Concurrently, 3.85 lakh plants were eradicated in Jenabil, Khejuri, and Jajagada under the Jashipur range, valued at Rs 7.70 crore.
Prior to this, on February 24, a similar operation saw the obliteration of 26 lakh opium plants within the core area of the reserve. Despite the concerted efforts to dismantle illegal plantations, authorities have yet to make any arrests in connection with these incidents.
