India Expands Financial Reach: Launches UPI and RuPay Services in Sri Lanka and Mauritius

India’s Unified Payment Interface (UPI) services have been introduced in Sri Lanka and Mauritius during a virtual ceremony held on Monday, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Mauritian PM Pravind Jugnauth, and Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremesinghe. Additionally, India’s RuPay card services were launched in both Mauritius and Sri Lanka during the same virtual event.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the significance of merging historic relations with modern technology during his speech at the launch event. In Sri Lanka, the UPI interface will be integrated with Lanka Pay, enabling digital transactions within the country and across borders, thereby simplifying remittances between the nations.

Mauritian PM Pravind Jugnauth mentioned that Indians visiting Mauritius can utilize their UPI apps to make payments by scanning merchant QR codes, and reciprocally, Mauritian visitors in India can do the same. The UPI system, developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), facilitates instant real-time inter-bank transactions via mobile phones, while RuPay serves as a global card payment network from India, accepted widely at various points of sale, ATMs, and online platforms.

The launch of these Indian financial services in Sri Lanka and Mauritius coincides with New Delhi’s deepening bilateral economic engagements with both nations. The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized India’s role as a frontrunner in Fintech innovation and Digital Public Infrastructure, underlining the prime minister’s commitment to sharing developmental experiences and innovations with partner countries.
