India is the most targeted country with 13.7 percent of all cyber-attacks, followed by the US with 9.6 percent, Indonesia and China with 9.3 percent and 4.5 percent, respectively.

This information was given in a new report released on Monday. According to cybersecurity firm Cyfirma, India was the most targeted country in 2022. There were 95 percent more cyber-attacks on government agencies in the second half of 2022 compared to the same period in 2021.

The number of state-sponsored cyber-attacks in India increased by more than 100 percent in 2022 compared to 2021. According to the report, healthcare is the most targeted sector by hackers, followed by education, research, government and military sectors. Kumar Ritesh, CEO and Founder of Cyfirma, said, “India’s growing prominence on the world stage and pressure from Western economies to favor India over other large countries, coupled with a young and tech-savvy population with low cybersec maturity, has created a demand for critical assets, “Played a key role in hackers coming after government agencies.”

Furthermore, the report revealed that an organization in India was attacked an average of 1,866 times per week in 2022. The most common types of cyber-attacks are phishing attacks, malware attacks, and ransomware attacks. The report said that about 78 percent of Indian organizations experienced a ransomware attack in 2021, of which 80 percent of the attacks resulted in data encryption. The report looked at 39 campaigns targeting different industries in India between January and July 2023. Known groups such as FancyBear, TA505, Mission 2025, Stone Panda and Lazarus Group were suspected to be behind these operations.

Of these 39 operations, 14 have been directed by Chinese state-sponsored groups with the intent of espionage. About 11 of these campaigns were planned by North Korea-backed hackers as part of Haas. The report said 10 attacks were carried out by Russian threat actors, of which only four were state-sponsored.
