INDIA protects against MPs suspension

Protests have erupted following the suspension of a significant number of MPs during the Winter Session, led by the Opposition-led Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc. Notable figures like Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, former party president Rahul Gandhi, and other alliance members plan to address the demonstration at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, scheduled for 11 am. Simultaneously, a nationwide protest has been organized at all district headquarters, as announced by Kharge.

The wave of suspensions unfolded in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha after disruptions marred the Winter Session, sparked by the breach of Parliament security on December 13. Demands for a statement from Union home minister Amit Shah regarding the incident fueled the turmoil. The session’s conclusion saw an unprecedented total of 146 MPs suspended, three of whom were ousted from Lok Sabha just before the sine-die conclusion.

In a prior protest, Opposition MPs, including those under suspension, marched from Parliament to Vijay Chowk, expressing their discontent with the actions of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar. Kharge emphasized the need for the government to “behave democratically,” alleging a lack of faith in democracy on the part of the BJP. He criticized the absence of Home Minister Shah and Prime Minister Modi within Parliament to address the security breach, contending that this violated parliamentary privilege.
