Indian Spinner Shahbaz Nadeem Announces Retirement from Cricket

Left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem has made the decision to retire from all forms of cricket in India at the age of 34. Having represented the national side in two Tests, he now sets his sights on participating in T20 leagues across the globe. Reflecting on his choice, Nadeem expressed his realization that the opportunity to play for India may not present itself again and thus, he wishes to create space for emerging talent. He stated, “I always feel that if you have some motivation [to play for India], then you always keep pushing yourself to perform well. However, now I know that I may not get a chance in the Indian team and so, it is better I give a chance to the young cricketers.”

Throughout his career, Nadeem has been a stalwart for his domestic team, Jharkhand, featuring in 140 first-class matches since 2004. His notable contribution includes claiming 542 wickets in the format. Despite playing only two Test matches for India, Nadeem’s domestic cricket statistics underscore his success, with an impressive tally of 28 fifers and an average of 28.73.

Addressing his decision, Nadeem emphasized his pragmatic approach, asserting, “I always keep emotions aside while taking decisions.” He acknowledged his two-decade-long association with the Jharkhand team and expressed confidence in the younger players to carry forward the team’s legacy. Grateful for the support he received throughout his journey, Nadeem extended his appreciation to his childhood coach, Imtiaz Hussain, and S Rahman of Indigo Club, for their guidance and encouragement.

Having also been part of various IPL franchises, including Delhi Daredevils and Sunrisers Hyderabad, Nadeem looks back on his cricketing career with gratitude and optimism for the future.
