India’s PM Modi Inaugurates UAE’s First Hindu Temple: A Symbol of Unity and Harmony

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) first Hindu temple in Abu Dhabi during his two-day visit to the Gulf nation. Built by the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS), a denomination of the Swaminarayan Sampradaya, a Vaishnav sect of Hinduism, the grand temple symbolizes the growing cultural ties between India and the UAE. The inauguration, which took place on Wednesday, February 14, was attended by UAE’s President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, highlighting the significance of communal harmony embraced by both nations.

Constructed on 27 acres of land, with 13.5 acres designated for the temple complex and another 13.5 acres allocated for parking, the temple stands as a testament to unity and collaboration across religions. The land for the temple was generously gifted by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, underscoring the spirit of religious tolerance and cooperation.

What distinguishes this temple is the diverse team behind its creation. With individuals from various religious backgrounds including Catholic Christian, Sikh, Buddhist, Parsi, and Jain traditions involved in its design and construction, the temple exemplifies a beautiful confluence of religions and cultures.

The vision for the temple dates back to April 1997 when Pramukh Swami Maharaj, the 10th spiritual guru and head of the sect, expressed his desire for a Hindu temple in the desert lands of Abu Dhabi. This vision, aimed at fostering unity among countries, communities, and cultures, resonated with the UAE’s commitment to promoting cultural diversity and tolerance.

Incorporating elements reflective of the UAE’s heritage, the temple features carvings of symbolic animals native to the region, as well as depictions of parables from various civilizations. The architectural design, boasting seven spires and traditional Nagara style, blends universal values and stories of harmony from different cultures.

Notable features of the temple include two central domes, the Dome of Harmony and the Dome of Peace, symbolizing human coexistence, and a Wall of Harmony adorned with milestones of the temple’s construction. Recognized for its architectural excellence, the temple has received accolades such as the Best Mechanical Project of the Year 2019 and the Best Interior Design Concept of the Year 2020.

The consecration ceremony of the temple, scheduled for February 14, will be conducted through a Vedic ritual by Mahant Swami Maharaj, with the temple opening to the public on February 18.
