Actor Kangana Ranaut’s foray into Himachal Pradesh politics has stirred concerns among state BJP leaders, according to her rival, Public Works Minister and Congress candidate from Mandi Lok Sabha seat, Vikramaditya Singh. The BJP has nominated Kangana as its candidate for the Mandi Parliament seat, marking the first instance of a celebrity contesting an election in Himachal Pradesh.
Vikramaditya Singh, hailing from the erstwhile princely state of Bushahr and son of six-time chief minister Virbhadra Singh, is a prominent figure in Himachal Pradesh politics. Currently serving as the Congress’ state unit president, he holds the position of Public Works Minister and has twice been elected as MLA from the Shimla (Rural) assembly constituency.
Singh highlighted how Kangana’s recent speech in Manali overshadowed the BJP’s rally in Hamirpur, launching its election campaign. He noted that her controversial remarks have diverted attention from senior party leaders, causing discomfort among state BJP leaders.
In her rally, Kangana criticized the “dynastic and family-centric” nature of Bollywood and targeted certain political families, including that of former Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray. She also referred to Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Vikramaditya Singh as “Bada Pappu and Chhota Pappu,” sparking further contention.
Responding to Kangana’s celebrity status, Vikramaditya Singh emphasized the importance of work and service to the people over a mere celebrity tag. He highlighted his successful track record in securing funds for development projects, asserting his commitment to the state’s progress.
Singh challenged Kangana to address her contributions to the state during crises such as the worst-ever monsoon disaster and questioned her ability to serve the Mandi constituency effectively. Both Singh and Kangana have exchanged derogatory remarks, with Singh labeling her the “Queen of Controversy” and Kangana dubbing him “Chota Pappu” relying on his “dynastic legacy.”
As the state prepares for polling on June 1, the rivalry between Vikramaditya Singh and Kangana Ranaut adds an intriguing dimension to the electoral landscape in Himachal Pradesh.
