Police have arrested Sanjay Roy, the prime suspect in the sexual harassment and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Government Hospital. Roy, who frequently visited the hospital, was apprehended and presented in court on Saturday. The court has placed him in judicial custody for 14 days.
The arrest has sparked widespread outrage in West Bengal, leading junior doctors in several districts to go on strike and demand strict action. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has pledged to seek the death penalty for Roy.

Police investigations revealed that Roy appeared on CCTV entering the hospital around 4 a.m. The footage also showed him interacting with the police, which raised suspicion. Police found a Bluetooth earphone near the victim, which they linked to Roy’s phone. Upon examining his phone, they discovered incriminating videos, solidifying their suspicion and leading to his arrest.

Roy, a civic volunteer with regular access to the hospital, has confessed to the crime. Civic volunteers, also known as ‘civic police,’ assist the West Bengal police. The authorities charged Roy under sections 64 (rape) and 103 (murder) of the BNS. He appeared in Sealdah court and the court has remanded him to police custody until August 23.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goel stated that the crime occurred between 3 and 6 a.m. Roy now faces charges of rape and murder based on circumstantial evidence and testimonies from doctors on night duty.
