The Odraff team recovered the body of a minor girl from the Janjavati River in Koraput district this morning, concluding a 72-hour search operation. The girl’s mother, Mati Tading, was found dead earlier. The tragic incident occurred on Sunday evening when the mother and daughter were swept away by the river.
Mati Tading, from Dogarethi village under Narayanapatna police station, went into labor last Thursday. Her husband admitted her to the Narayanapatna Group Health Centre, but doctors did not provide a delivery date, so the family stayed at Mati’s mother’s house in the suburbs of Narayanapatna.
On Sunday evening, Mati, who was eight months pregnant, and her six-year-old daughter went to the Janjavati River, about 100 meters from the house, to defecate without informing her husband. While at the river, Mati’s daughter was swept away by the current. Mati attempted to rescue her but also drowned. Local residents alerted Mati’s husband, who then called for help. The Odraff team conducted a search operation, recovering Mati’s body within two days. The body of the daughter was found this morning.
