Landslides Wreak Havoc in Kerala, 2-Day Mourning Declared

The catastrophic landslides that struck the Mundakkai and Churalmala areas early Tuesday morning, more than 180 people are reported missing, and over 300 houses have been completely destroyed. The landslides occurred between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m., catching many residents asleep and unable to escape. Rescue operations are underway, with the Navy, Army, and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) actively involved. The Kerala government has declared two days of mourning in response to the tragedy.

The heavy rains that have battered Kerala for the past two days led to the worst impacts in Meppadi, Mundakkai, Attalamala, Nulpujha, and Churalmala villages in Wayanad district. The landslide first obliterated Meppadi village, followed by a massive deluge of soil, stones, and mud that engulfed neighboring villages. The disaster struck during the night, resulting in significant loss of life as many were asleep.

The NDRF was the first to launch rescue efforts, followed by the Army and the Para Regiment. Navy personnel from Ejjimala Naval Ghat in Kannur have also joined the operation, with thirty special swimmers deployed to assist in rescuing individuals from the rising river.
