Low Pressure Area in Bay of Bengal: Odisha on High Alert

A new low-pressure area has formed in the central Bay of Bengal and the adjoining North Bay of Bengal. This system is expected to intensify and move northwestward towards the Odisha coast, bringing heavy rainfall to various parts of the state. The heavy downpour is predicted to continue until the 22nd of this month, affecting multiple districts.

In response, the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has issued an alert for the South Coastal districts including Khurda, Nayagarh, Puri, Boudh, Kandhamal, Sonpur, and Kalahandi. Urban centers, such as Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, and Berhampur, are also under close watch, with their respective Commissioners instructed to monitor the situation vigilantly.

The anticipated heavy rains pose a significant risk of flooding and waterlogging across affected areas. Hilly regions may also experience landslides due to the intense precipitation. Field-level officials have been directed to remain alert and ready to manage any emerging crises. Additionally, engineers are tasked with monitoring the integrity of river and canal embankments, especially in vulnerable areas. In preparation for potential flooding, the SRC has ordered the readiness of necessary equipment and resources for immediate response.
