Mamata Mahant Resigns from Rajya Sabha & BJD

BJD MP Mamata Mahant has resigned from the Rajya Sabha and her primary membership in the party. Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar announced her resignation in the House today. Mahant’s resignation has sparked speculation about the reasons behind her decision. Sources suggest that BJD may have asked her to step down to make way for another candidate. The party had sent her to the Rajya Sabha in March 2020, playing the tribal card.

With BJD having only 51 members in the current assembly, it is unlikely that the party can send its candidate to the Rajya Sabha without support from other parties. However, there is a possibility that BJD may have reached a consensus with other parties to send one of its candidates to the Rajya Sabha. Mahant announced her resignation on social media, stating that she had submitted her resignation letter to BJD President Naveen Patnaik. She said that she did not feel the need to stay in the party as her goal was to serve the people.

However, rumors suggest that BJD may have influenced Mahant’s decision to resign. The party’s move to ask a tribal leader to step down from the Rajya Sabha for its own political interests has been widely criticized. Mahant’s tenure in the Rajya Sabha was till 2026. Her resignation has raised questions about BJD’s strategy and its treatment of tribal leaders. The party is likely to nominate another candidate for the Rajya Sabha seat vacated by Mahant.
