
A first-year MBBS student at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Odisha’s Berhampur reportedly faced ragging by his seniors in the hostel. The student, identified as Rudra Rout from Balasore, was allegedly assaulted by two seniors on the night of February 9. The incident was brought to light following a complaint lodged at Baidyanathpur police station.
The police registered a case against two fourth-year MBBS students of the college, Stalin Mahapatra and Jyoti Prakash Rout, based on the complaint. According to Berhampur SP Dr. Saravana Vivek M, the assault occurred inside the MKCG campus without provocation while Rudra was returning from band practice around 11 pm on February 9. Rudra reported the incident at Baidyanathpur police station under Berhampur police district on February 11, leading to the registration of a case under sections 341, 323, 325, and 34 of IPC at Baidyanathpur PS.
During the investigation, police visited the scene, obtained statements from the victim and others, and conducted a medical examination of the victim. The accused were served notices and asked to appear at the police station.
Further investigation is underway, and legal action will be taken against the accused based on its outcome, the police stated. A report will be submitted to the Dean of MKCG Medical College and Hospital for appropriate action against the perpetrators in accordance with UGC guidelines.
The Anti-Ragging Committee of MKCG Medical College will convene to address the matter and take action against the senior students, as per the SP. Meanwhile, Sujay Rout, father of the victim Rudra, alleged on social media that his son faced ragging by two seniors while returning from band rehearsal. He claimed that after dropping the seniors near a police outpost as requested, they severely beat his son, who is now in a state of depression.
Prof. Dr. Santosh Kumar Mishra, Dean and Principal of MKCG Medical College and Hospital, mentioned that a four-member team has been formed to investigate the incident, and the allegation has been referred to the Anti-Ragging Cell. Additional Director DMET Dr. Umakant Satpathy assured that steps are being taken to curb ragging in medical colleges, with the police also investigating the incident at MKCG. He emphasized that appropriate actions will be taken based on the outcomes of both the institutional and police inquiries, in accordance with Supreme Court guidelines and the efforts of the Anti-Ragging Cell.
