Ministry of Education ask for NCERT to update books annually

The Ministry of Education (MoE) has tasked the NCERT with conducting regular reviews of its textbooks and ensuring yearly updates, as per insider reports. While there hasn’t been a specific directive regarding the frequency of revisions for NCERT textbooks, the National Council of Educational Research and Training has intermittently refreshed content since 2017.

A recent rationalization effort was undertaken, prompted by school closures due to the pandemic. However, there have been claims of biased editing from certain quarters.

Recognizing the importance of keeping pace with the rapidly evolving world, insiders stress the necessity of regularly updating textbooks. The NCERT has been directed to conduct annual reviews and implement updates prior to the commencement of each new academic session. Plans are underway to establish a structured system for this purpose.

Insiders emphasize that NCERT textbooks should not remain static for prolonged periods. They advocate for annual reviews prior to printing, ensuring inclusion of any necessary changes or new information. Emerging topics such as Artificial Intelligence highlight the need for adaptability and relevance.

Presently, the NCERT is engaged in developing textbooks aligned with the New Curriculum Framework (NCF) introduced the previous year. Anticipated timelines suggest that textbooks aligned with the new framework will be available for all classes by 2026, with a projected two-year period required for full implementation across all classes.

This year, the NCERT has rolled out new textbooks for classes 3 and 6, marking a step forward in the ongoing curriculum development process.
