Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Friday that the government is in the process of devising a novel scheme aimed at constructing contemporary buildings along national highways. These structures will incorporate amenities such as food services, clean drinking water, restrooms, parking facilities, and resting areas for drivers. During the inaugural phase, 1,000 such facilities are slated for development, a declaration made during the Prime Minister’s address at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2024.
Emphasizing the initiative’s potential impact, Modi stated that these facilities are poised to enhance the quality of life and travel experience for truck and taxi drivers. By addressing the challenges faced by these drivers, the government aspires to not only improve their well-being but also contribute to accident prevention.
Acknowledging the struggles of truck drivers and their families, Modi also underscored the transformative influence of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in streamlining trade and eliminating check posts at state borders. Furthermore, he highlighted the positive effects of FASTag technology, noting its role in fuel and time savings within the industry. According to recent studies, FASTag technology is estimated to contribute an annual benefit of Rs 40,000 crore to the economy.
Looking towards the future, the Prime Minister asserted that the mobility sector will play a pivotal role in achieving the ‘developed India’ target by 2047. He emphasized India’s growing significance in the global automotive market, citing its position as the third-largest market for passenger vehicles globally and among the top three countries manufacturing commercial vehicles.
Modi reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting various sectors, citing initiatives like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme, which has an allocation exceeding Rs 25,000 crore for the industry.
