Naveen Patnaik Faces Scrutiny in Hindalco Coal Corruption Case

The issue of coal corruption has intensified following recent revelations by the CBI regarding Hindalco’s dealings. The investigation has sparked controversy due to former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s involvement. In 2005, Patnaik had recommended Hindalco for the Talabira mine, and this recommendation is now under scrutiny.

Hindalco faces allegations of bribing officials to secure environmental clearance for the Talabira mine. Both the BJP and Congress have targeted Patnaik, demanding accountability. BJP MLA Tankhar Tripathi criticized the previous administration, stating, “Many actions were taken with blatant disregard for laws and regulations. The CBI investigation will reveal the truth, and those who have portrayed themselves as paragons of virtue should be exposed.”

Congress MLA CS Rajan Ekka echoed similar sentiments, asserting, “The CBI investigation will uncover who received undue favors. If a mine was allocated without proper scrutiny, those responsible, including opposition leaders, will be held accountable.”

In contrast, BJD MLA Pradeep Dishari defended Patnaik, arguing that his letter recommending Hindalco was a standard procedure aimed at Odisha’s development. “Patnaik’s actions during his 24-year tenure have demonstrated transparency. There is no evidence suggesting that his recommendation was intended to facilitate corruption,” Dishari stated. The CBI investigation continues to unfold, with political implications for key figures in the controversy.
