Nayab Singh Saini takes oath as new CM Amid BJP-JJP Alliance Turmoil in Haryana

Nayab Singh Saini was sworn in as the new chief minister of Haryana on Tuesday, succeeding Manohar Lal Khattar. Among the five ministers who took the oath alongside Saini at the ceremony held at Raj Bhavan were BJP MLAs Banwari Lal, Jai Parkash Dalal, and independent legislator Ranjit Singh.

Former Home Minister Anil Vij, who had left the legislative party meeting prematurely, was notably absent from the oath ceremony in Chandigarh. Saini, representing the OBC community and serving as an MP from Kurukshetra, assumed the role of Haryana BJP state president in October of the previous year. Following Manohar Lal Khattar’s resignation amid tensions within the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party-Jannayak Janata Party (BJP-JJP) alliance, Saini was selected as the BJP’s legislature party leader.

Expressing gratitude on social media platform X, Saini acknowledged Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP National President JP Nadda, Haryana BJP In-charge Biplab Deb, and former Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar for his appointment. The rift between the BJP and the JJP deepened after unsuccessful negotiations regarding seat sharing for the Lok Sabha elections. The Khattar cabinet, which included 14 ministers including the Chief Minister and three members from the Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala-led JJP, collectively resigned.

Currently, the BJP holds 41 seats in the 90-member assembly, while the JJP has 10. Additionally, the ruling coalition enjoys the backing of six out of seven independent members. Meanwhile, the primary opposition, Congress, commands 30 MLAs, while the Indian National Lok Dal and Haryana Lokhit Party each hold one seat. Notably, the BJP swept all 10 Lok Sabha seats in the state during the 2019 elections.

In response to Khattar’s resignation, Congress MP Deepender Hooda remarked, “All that is happening in Haryana is because the public has decided to bring change. The public was upset with the present government in the state.
