
Bollywood actors Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn have been issued notices by the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) on October 20 for advertising tobacco companies. Deputy Solicitor General SB Pandey gave this information to the Allahabad High Court’s Lucknow bench on a contempt of court petition.
Advocate Motilal Yadav filed a petition expressing concern over Padmashree awardee celebrities those who advertising tobacco companies. He mentioned in his petition that these celebrities are advertising products that are harmful for the health. He further pointed out that the guidelines should be drawn to withdraw the awards from Padmashree awardees if their behavior is not proper. He also mentioned the names of many Bollywood stars in this notice. Among them, there were the name of the actors like Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn along with Amitabh Bachchan.
The court asked the petitioner to approach the Government of India in this case. But as the government did not take any action, the petitioner filed a contempt of court petition. Accepting his plea, the court issued notices to the Cabinet Secretary to the Government of India and the Chief Commissioner of the Central Camp Protection Authority (CCPA).
In response to that notice, the Deputy Solicitor General told the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court that notices have been issued to actors Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgan.
Amitabh Bachchan also sent a notice to the tobacco company that featured him in the ad. Because he had already cancelled his contract with the said company. The court hearing on this case will be on May 9, 2024.
