The One Nation One Election Bill will be introduced in Parliament today. The government plans to implement a single electoral officer for the Lok Sabha elections, and the bill is expected to be presented around noon. In preparation, the BJP has issued a three-line whip to all its Lok Sabha MPs to attend the session and support the bill.
Law Minister Meghwal will introduce the bill in the Lok Sabha and later request that it be referred to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for further discussion. The JPC, chaired by a BJP MP, will examine the bill, with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla clarifying today’s committee members.
The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the bill, which has been a topic of national media discussions. After its introduction, the bill will likely be referred to the Joint Parliamentary Committee for detailed scrutiny.
This bill aims to hold Lok Sabha, Assembly, Municipal, and Panchayat elections within 100 days across the country, requiring extensive constitutional amendments. The proposed legislation will synchronize Lok Sabha and state assembly elections, a plan endorsed by a committee chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind.
The government intends to involve various stakeholders, including intellectuals, experts, and state legislative speakers, in the discussion before the final version of the bill is presented. Additionally, the government plans to gather public opinions before enacting the bill into law, aiming for an inclusive “one country, one election” system.
