One Nation One ID scheme for Students

The Government is planning to roll out One Nation One ID scheme for Students. There is a big news for students from school to college. Now they will soon have a special ID with their unique identification number. However, for this the consent of their parents will be necessary.
Under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Union Education Ministry has launched a ‘One Nation, One Student ID’ called ‘Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry (APAAR)’ for every student from pre-primary to higher education. This will be different from the 12 digit Aadhaar ID that every student has.

APAAR ID will be a record of the skill learned by the students:
It is reported that the APAAR ID, an education ecosystem registry or EduLocker, will be treated as a lifetime ID number and will track the academic journey and achievements of students.
The Education Ministry has directed all states and union territories to start the process of creating APAAR IDs for students. AICTE Chairman T G Sitharaman has informed that APAAR and National Credit Framework will be the QR codes for learners across India. Every skill learned by the students during their studies will be recorded in it.

Meeting with the parents to inform about APAAR IDs:
The state school education department has asked educational institutions to organize a meeting of parents and teachers between October 16 and 18 to discuss the importance of creating APAAR IDs. It has been told that the data collected on Aadhaar ID will be the basis of APAAR ID. Also, the schools said that they are already struggling to update the Aadhaar details of the students on the portal.

Data will remain confidential:
The government has said that this will require the consent of the parents of the students. The government has assured that the data will remain confidential and will be shared only with government agencies. That will also be shared where it is needed. The parent who has given consent can withdraw it at any time. After consent, it becomes the responsibility of the school to upload it on the Central Unified District and Information System for Education Plus portal.
