Today, the Indian Parliament saw significant turmoil as discussions around the Waqf Act amendment were overshadowed by an uproar over the case of female wrestler Vinesh Phogat. The Rajya Sabha was disrupted when opposition members raised the issue, leading to a heated exchange with Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar.
The controversy intensified when Dhankhar expressed frustration over the opposition’s handling of the matter, stating, “The whole country stands with Vinesh Phogat. Both the Prime Minister and I have expressed our concerns about this incident, but it is unfortunate that politics is being played with this issue.” His remarks were met with opposition members staging a walkout from the House.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge questioned the circumstances surrounding Phogat’s removal, demanding an explanation for why no action had been taken. In response, TMC MP Derek O’Brien shouted in protest, which further agitated Dhankhar. The Chairman accused the opposition of challenging his authority and disrespecting the decorum of the House.
Dhankhar criticized the behavior of opposition members, accusing them of undermining the dignity of the Parliament and creating a disorderly environment. He expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of cooperation and support from the House, stating, “I am not running away from my duties, but the behavior witnessed today has made it difficult for me to continue.” The session ended with heightened tension, as Dhankhar’s frustration underscored the challenges of maintaining order in a politically charged atmosphere.
