Now the journey of hours will be completed in minutes. India is now progressing rapidly in terms of public transport. InterGlobe Enterprises, a company backed by airline IndiGo and America’s Archer Aviation are going to start an all-electric air taxi service in the year 2026.
If they get operator approval, the partnership aims to capitalize on the need for transportation solutions in the world’s most populous country, according to a report by news site NDTV. This news has also come out at a time when many cities of the country are facing the brunt of pollution.
Archer Aviation, backed by Chrysler-parent Stellantis and United Airlines, makes electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, which could be seen as the future of city air transport. The report states that this ‘Midnight’ e-plane can carry four passengers and a pilot to a range of 100 miles (about 161 kilometers). The aim of this service is to start it in the national capital Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru with 200 aircraft which will definitely be helpful for reducing air pollution.
Giving examples, the companies said that a journey which usually takes 60 to 90 minutes by car in cities like Delhi will take only about 7 minutes by air taxi. InterGlobe Enterprises also plans to use the e-aircraft for cargo, logistics, medical emergency and charter services. Archer is reported to have won a $142 million deal from the US Air Force in July to provide six Midnight aircraft. In October it will launch an air taxi service in the UAE.
