Priyanka Gandhi Vadra Takes Oath as MP, Marking a New Chapter in Lok Sabha

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra took her oath as an MP for the first time today after winning from Wayanad in Kerala. Holding a copy of the Constitution, she swore in as the House began its proceedings. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and fellow MPs were present to witness the ceremony. Priyanka’s husband, Robert Vadra, their children, and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge attended the event in the lower house gallery.

For the swearing-in ceremony, Priyanka wore a traditional Kerala kasavu saree—white with a golden border, typically worn during Malayali occasions. She also donned a share while taking the oath, signalling her intention to work actively for Wayanad.

With Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s entry into the Lok Sabha at 52, three members of the Gandhi family will sit in Parliament together for the first time in a decade. While Priyanka and Rahul Gandhi occupy Lok Sabha seats, their mother, Sonia Gandhi, represents them in the Rajya Sabha.

Priyanka becomes the third woman from the Gandhi family to take the oath as an MP, following Sonia Gandhi and her grandmother, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor expressed his joy over Priyanka’s election to the Lok Sabha.

After winning both Wayanad and Raebareli, Rahul Gandhi vacated the Wayanad seat. Priyanka decided to contest the by-election from Wayanad, securing a victory with more votes than Rahul.
