Bangladesh’s Attorney General M. Asaduzman has called for the removal of the word ‘secular’ from the country’s constitution. Now 90% of the population living in Bangladesh are Muslims, so there is no need to keep the word ‘secular’ in the constitution, he said, to remove it.
In addition, he said to change the title given to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, known as the ‘Father of the Nation’. Sheikh Mujibur is the father of Sheikh Hasina, the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post amid controversy over reservations in the country. After that, there is an interim government in Bangladesh.
A court session on the validity of the 25th Amendment was held under the supervision of Justices Farah Mahbab and Dekshisha Roy Chowdhury. In this meeting, Attorney General Asaduzman proposed that, “the changes in the constitution should strengthen democracy instead of encouraging power.”
He further said, ‘These amendments will link the constitution with the democratic and historical ethos of the country. Earlier there was constant trust and hope in Ahla. I want it to continue as before. Article 2-A states that all religions shall be given equal rights in the nation. Section 9 deals with ‘Bengali nationality’. But this is contradictory.’
Apart from this, he also requested to remove the title of ‘Father of the Nation’ given to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. “This is causing national division and restricting freedom of speech,” he said.
“It is important to respect Sheikh Mujib’s contribution, but enforcing it through legislation is creating division,” he said.
