Rajendra Nagar Coaching Centers Sealed

Three UPSC students lost their lives on Saturday after heavy rains caused a fatal flood at a coaching center in Delhi’s Rajendranagar. In response, the Delhi Metropolitan Corporation (MCD) has moved swiftly, sealing coaching centers operating illegally in basements.

On Sunday, MCD officials conducted inspections across Rajendra Nagar, targeting coaching centers that were running in violation of regulations. Mayor Shaili Oberoi confirmed that the sealing process has begun for all such centers in Rajendra Nagar, with plans to expand the campaign citywide if needed. By late night, centers including IAS Gurukul, Chahal Academy, and Plutus Academy were among those sealed.

The tragic incident occurred at the RAU’S IAS Study Circle, where the basement, used as a library, was inundated by floodwaters. The basement, approximately 8 feet below ground, rapidly filled with water, trapping students inside. The heavy rains had caused the center’s gates to close, exacerbating the situation.

The police have arrested Abhishek Gupta, the owner of the coaching center, and a coordinator. Both individuals have been sent to judicial custody for 14 days. An ongoing investigation is examining how the water breached the basement and assessing the adequacy of safety measures in place.
