S. Jaishankar Meets Wang Yi to Address LAC Disputes at SCO

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, marking the first high-level interaction since the formation of the Modi 3.0 government in New Delhi. The meeting, held against the backdrop of strained relations due to the prolonged standoff in eastern Ladakh, is being hailed as a significant step towards easing tensions between the two countries.

The two leaders were seen shaking hands warmly and posing for photographs, signaling a potential thaw in bilateral relations. The deadlock, which began on May 5, 2020, had led to violent clashes in the Pangong Tso area near Galwan and severely strained ties, except in trade. The SCO summit, attended by Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, saw India represented by Jaishankar in the absence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

During their discussions, Jaishankar and Wang Yi addressed issues related to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and agreed to intensify efforts to restore peace along the border. They emphasized the importance of respecting the LAC and ensuring stability in the border areas, with a focus on resolving remaining issues in eastern Ladakh. This meeting is considered crucial for stabilizing bilateral relations and underscores the ongoing efforts by both nations to manage their differences and work towards a peaceful resolution of the border disputes.
