Violence erupted in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, following a survey of the Jama Masjid, sparking widespread anger among locals. The unrest, which began Sunday morning, has continued into today. Four people have lost their lives, and over 20 others have been injured.
In response to the violence, the authorities suspended internet services in Sambhal and nearby areas. Schools up to class 12 have been ordered to remain closed, and the entry of outsiders, social organizations, and public representatives has been restricted until December 1. The administration imposed these measures due to the highly sensitive situation.
Reports indicate that after the violence and stone-pelting, authorities seized a significant number of weapons from the homes of the arrested individuals. Legal action under the National Security Act (NSA) will be taken against the miscreants. A total of 21 people, including two women, have been detained, and the accused are being identified through CCTV footage.
The controversy traces back to the Mughal Empire when Hindu groups claimed that a Hindu temple was demolished to build the mosque. As a result, they demanded the mosque’s removal. The court ordered a survey, which took place last week. A second survey attempt was made yesterday, but it faced strong opposition. A crowd gathered around the mosque, and protesters threw stones at the police. In response, the police used tear gas, escalating the situation into violence.
