Security Reinforcements and Strategic Measures in Odisha Ahead of General Elections

Security measures in Odisha ahead of the General Elections 2024 have been reinforced, according to reliable reports on Monday. A meeting convened by the Election Commission on February 17th resulted in the decision to deploy paramilitary forces along district and state borders. Notably, 75 companies of Central Armed Police Forces have been stationed in Odisha, comprising 35 companies each of CRPF and BSF, along with five companies of CISF.

These forces are assigned to the pre-poll phase across two stages, focusing on patrolling and anti-Naxal operations. Following directives from the Election Commission, the CRPF IG from the Union Home Department has been appointed as the State Force Coordinator. Reports on the activities of paramilitary forces during the pre-election period are being communicated to the Union Home Ministry and the Election Commission. In anticipation of potential Naxal incursions from the Chhattisgarh border, the CRPF has established four new camps with Cobra Forces deployed.

Paramilitary forces are striving to facilitate secure voting in Naxal-affected regions such as Kandhamal and Boudh. Election observers and district magistrates will identify sensitive and hypersensitive polling booths, with security arrangements in Odisha adjusted accordingly. Installation of GPS systems in patrolling vehicles is underway to enhance monitoring, especially in Naxal-infested areas.

Patrol vehicles in these regions will be centrally monitored, with additional central forces to be deployed if deemed necessary during elections. Recent arrests have predominantly involved individuals from Chhattisgarh, prompting the establishment of a large camp at Nuapada Datunama for joint anti-Naxal operations conducted by Odisha Police and CRPF. Further comprehensive reports on these operations are anticipated.
