Shaktikanta Das Concludes Six-Year Tenure as RBI Governor Today

RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das concludes his tenure today after successfully leading the central bank through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic for six years. He assumed office on December 12, 2018, following Urjit Patel’s sudden resignation.

Das effectively managed the country’s inflation issues during and after the pandemic. The central government extended his tenure for three more years in 2021, making him one of the longest-serving RBI Governors.

Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra will succeed Shaktikanta Das as RBI Governor. The Committee on Appointments of the Union Cabinet has confirmed his appointment. Malhotra officially takes charge tomorrow.

As the 26th Governor of the RBI, Sanjay Malhotra will serve a three-year term. A 1990-batch IAS officer from the Rajasthan cadre, he currently serves as Revenue Secretary under the Ministry of Finance.

Previously, Malhotra held the position of Secretary of the Financial Services Department in the Ministry of Finance. Over his 33-year career, he has gained extensive experience in finance, taxation, energy, IT, and mining.
