Pakistan has reiterated its support for China, with Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif highlighting the significance of the relationship. During a meeting with journalists at his residence in Lahore, Sharif praised China’s contributions to Pakistan, asserting that Beijing has provided support that the U.S. cannot match.
Sharif emphasized the importance of improving relations with the U.S. but made it clear that this should not come at the expense of Pakistan’s ties with China. He noted that the second phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is advancing swiftly and has bolstered cooperation between the two countries.
The Prime Minister has requested China to extend the repayment period for Pakistan’s debt by five to seven years, which he believes would help reduce inflation and energy costs. Sharif mentioned that Pakistan is awaiting a response to this request but remains hopeful for a positive outcome.
Regarding Pakistan-U.S. relations, Sharif stressed that while enhancing ties with Washington is crucial, it should not diminish Pakistan’s relationship with Beijing. He assured that Pakistan values its friendship with both countries and is committed to fostering strong relationships with each.
Sharif also expressed concern for the safety of Chinese citizens in Pakistan and assured that the government will make every effort to protect them amid recent attacks on Chinese nationals.
His remarks come at a time when the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has exacerbated Pakistan’s debt and economic challenges. Despite these issues, Sharif emphasized the importance of maintaining strong ties with China and addressing public concerns about energy prices and inflation.
