Stop calling ‘My Lord, I’ll give you half of my salary: Know Why a Judge said like this!

New Delhi: A Supreme Court judge has lashed out at a senior advocate for repeatedly saying ‘My Lord and Your Lordship’ during proceedings. During the hearing of a case on Wednesday, Justice P.S. Narasimha said, ‘How many times will you say ‘My Lord’? If you stop saying that, I will give you half my salary.’

Lawyers, while presenting their arguments, address judges as ‘My Lord or Your Lordship’. However, some oppose the practice, saying it is a colonial-era practice and a sign of slavery.

Justice Narsimha then asked why you don’t use ‘sir’ instead My Lord, otherwise he would start counting the number of times the senior advocate uttered the expression ‘my Lords’.

In 2006, the Bar Council of India passed a resolution that no lawyer should address a judge as ‘My Lord and Your Lordship’ but this has not yet become a practice.
