Supreme court’s order to conduct election in Jammu & Kashmir by Sept 30

The Supreme Court is deciding if it’s okay for the government to cancel ‘Article 370,’ a special rule for Jammu and Kashmir. They won’t talk about the President’s rule in 2018 because it wasn’t part of the case. The Chief Justice says Article 370 was temporary. In 2019, the government removed the special rule and made Jammu and Kashmir two Union Territories.

The court’s decision, led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, is in response to petitions against the government’s move four years ago. After a 16-day hearing, the court will give its judgment on September 5. People argue that the government can’t cancel Article 370 on its own, as the power was with Jammu and Kashmir’s legislature after it dissolved in 1957.

Today, the Supreme Court told the Election Commission to hold elections in Jammu and Kashmir by September 30 next year. Article 370 was canceled in August 2019, more than a year after the government collapsed. The court won’t talk about the President’s Rule in 2018 because it’s not part of the case against canceling the special rule under Article 356.
