Telangana Student’s Tragic Suicide Sparks Debate Over “Not even one minute late” Rule

A tragic incident occurred in Telangana when a class 11th student, Tekum Siva Kumar, took his own life after reportedly being denied entry to the exam centre for allegedly arriving late. His body was discovered in Satnala dam in Adilabad district, accompanied by a suicide note expressing remorse to his father for not being able to handle the distress. The note, written in Telugu, conveyed his anguish over missing the exam for the first time and his profound sense of regret.

Kumar’s family was left devastated by the heart-wrenching scene as they mourned his loss while retrieving his body from the dam. The discovery of the suicide note, alongside his wristwatch and wallet, added to the sorrowful circumstances surrounding his death.

The incident reignited scrutiny of the controversial “not even one minute late” rule enforced by the authorities at the exam centre, which prevented Kumar from taking the intermediate examination due to his alleged tardiness. This rule, which strictly prohibits students from entering the exam premises even if they are a minute late, has stirred debate once again following Kumar’s tragic suicide.

Kumar’s untimely death also raised allegations of mistreatment by college authorities, further fueling the ongoing discourse surrounding the stringent enforcement of rules within the education system in Telangana.
